WTF?
I don't know much about this group, the Friends of New Orleans, but this Denver Post story, if true, stinks to high heaven.
Friends of New Orleans, a charity formed to help that city recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, is paying for the party, and for a concert with New Orleans-style food at the Fillmore Auditorium afterward for the 6,000 delegates and their guests on Aug. 24, the Sunday before the convention opens.
and
The party is meant to commemorate the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans three years after Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, leaving 80 percent of the city submerged.
Look, if we are to be the party of reform, the party of change, the party of responsibility, then we don't need these kinds of bad decisions popping up in Denver.
I'll also note that if this is a way for this charity group to raise even more money than it will spend, then great! Charities have fundraising events all the time. But that was not made clear in the story.
Now, gasbag republican talking heads have more fodder to make us look like hypocrites.
And look at some of the local blog comments:
So by contributing to Friends of New Orleans you actually get to feed a bunch of fat-cat Democrats in Colorado. Typical.
And these are the people you are going to choose to run this country?
Essentially, they will be diverting funds for Katrina relief to have a big party in Denver! All this on top of the Elmer Gantry show, the Un-Democratic selection process, etc etc.
Dean and Obama along the Friends of New Orleans need to take a good long hard look at this plan, and either get the message straight, or squash it.
