I realize this diary may be a bit controversial, but I'll go ahead with it anyway. Could we Obama supporters help with the Democratic unity efforts by making some small donations to Hillary's campaign to help pay off some of their debts? Maybe just a $5.01 donation?
Yes, there are fair arguments against this idea: Hillary got herself into that debt. She and Bill are really rich and can afford it. There was some questionable behavior from her campaign and surrogates throughout the race. That $5.01 could be donated to Obama or the DNC or to a favorite down-ticket candidate.
Those things may all be true, but what I'm talking about here is simply a small gesture of coming together as a party and forgiving old wounds in the name of something much, much larger. It's showing Clinton supporters that we Obama supporters do appreciate the brains, tenacity, and effort that she showed the nation in this epic primary battle. She and Obama have proven forever to the country that you don't have to be an old white guy to have a successful run for President. They both stampeded like 6 or 7 pretty capable white guys in the glare of the national spotlight! As an white guy, I must admit I love it! (I was fr Dodd initially, but Obama won my heart and mind.)
Yeah, some of the Obama vs. Clinton battle was ugly, but let's face it, politics IS freakin' ugly. If you can handle some ugliness, then don't watch. Much of their battle was stunning. Wasn't there like 21 debates or something? I watched at least 8 of them and the Obama vs. Clinton match-up was worth every penny. Personally, I believe the 15-round heavyweight bout we just witnessed will end up being great for Obama and the Democrats in many ways, and willl help the 50-state strategy going into the November.
Anyway, I can't really afford even $5.01 right now with gas prices cutting deeply into my already small paycheck. But I'm going to do it anyway, in part to show my respect for her historic run, and in part in the spirit of Democratic unity.
