So who's it gonna be? For the Dems, I'm struck by how obvious a choice that Dianne Feinstein would be - if she were 10 years younger. But since so many Americans might think that Obama's 10 years too young for the job, maybe they'd accept someone who was 10 years too old for VP. And for all the talk of McCain making a one-term pledge, well, why not for the VP slot? If the VP slot were potentially open in 4 years, perhaps certain people could be inspired to behave for that period of time...
She's an obvious leader with national name recognition. She's a big Clinton supporter. She's an inspiration to all of those 60+ white women who might otherwise feel resentful of Obama. She's likely to be an asset among the Jewish community. What's not to like, other than age?
For the GOP, I can't understand the focus on Jindal. There are better choices for McCain. The two best choices are Kay Bailey Hutchison and Condoleeza Rice. Hutchison makes the best case to the "downscale white women" who seem hostile to the Dems Obama this year. She could siphon a lot of votes, especially if Obama does not nominate a woman for VP.
The one candidate I have always believed would be the GOP VP choice is Rice. She'd be almost perfect for McCain. She might cause some on the hard right some heartburn, but those guys are simply going to have to swallow hard and take it this time. Rice gives certain folks in Middle America an excuse not to vote for Obama in the top spot, despite their agreement with him on important issues. But maybe she's too tied in with Bush, so maybe McCain will pass on her.
Of course, there's the matter of her resume; outside of James Baker, Rice has the best resume of anyone alive in government service. (If you can ignore the disastrous consequences of her actions, that is.)
So I'd advise Feinstein and Hutchison. If I were a betting man, I'd bet Webb and Hutchison.
What ya think?
