Are we at the point where all is fair in politics and you throw the kitchen sink at your opponent? Or are there certain lines we shouldn't cross when it comes to impugning your opponents character?

So, here are the questions:
Do his personal peccadilloes directly effect his ability to serve in an elected capacity?
Or are they acceptable fodder for taking down an opponent?
Does it speak to character, or is it character assassination?
Open thread for discussion below. What do we think, as a community? Remember, this is one of those eye of the beholder, subjective situations. We aren't really in control of this. If the media thinks they can make a buck off it, they will. But is it legit? There is a long and glorious tradition of this type of thing in presidential history. Some were covered up, others front page news. What do we think?
I'm sure I don't have to remind anyone that this is hardly a partisan issue. Democrats have had some fairly high profile problems in this area as well. Is what's good for the goose good for the gander or do we take the high road?
