Probably the one good thing this Bush administration has managed to do
I have not seen much discussion regarding this, but I think its huge. Sudan's president Omar al Bashir has just been charged with committing war crimes in Darfur. http://news.bbc.co.uk/...
An arrest warrant has not been issued yet, but this essentially means that Omar and his henchmen are not safe outside of Darfur anymore and that they can be detained if they travel to an Western country
I have to say I never thought it would even come to this because Sudan's best friends China and Saudi Arabia would never allow for it. I am surprised Bush administration did not cave into pressure here and did go forward by allowing the ICC to charge Bashir with war crimes. China has been found to be providing arms, as well as money to the Sudanese government and Saudi Arabia will never let anyone now touch their Sunni brethren, So it is hard to say if an arrest warrant will be issued, given that China and Saudi Arabia could make a lot of noise or put a lot of pressure on the Western nations.
But I think we all can take this as one small victory for the people of Darfur
