So many times on this blog we talk about healthcare nightmares and this is not to discount them but many times the horrendous experiences overshadow the everyday good ones that happen and are not noticed because they weren't complained about. This is one such story.
Take the leap of faith...
Joshua, our 21 y/o has had a heart arrythmia for several years. He has worn a monitor a number of times but it never captured his problem.
Back in June he was working (lawn care) and had an episode that lasted over 15 minutes. His helper called 911 and he was rushed to the ER where they continued to monitor his EKG. It was a very unusual pattern, one the doctors couldn't get a handle on.
He was referred to a cardiac specialist who had preliminary tests performed on him only to determine that he (the specialist) had no idea what the problem was.
So, they performed a Cardiac Catherization. It went on for several hours and was an incredibly stressful and painful procedure on this 21 y/o. They finally isolated the problem but couldn't perform the fix because after several hours he was under too much stress to continue.
He came into the recovery room with tears in his eyes. During that time Josh was injected with drugs that would simulate many types of disorders to try to replicate the EKG printout he initially presented with. Finally, they nailed it.
He was too weak to fix it then and there so the upshot is his condition is non life threatening, is easily corrected and he will have the corrective procedure done this winter.
The whole experience has left us with mixed feelings. His care was excellent. The Nurses, Doctors and staff in general were wonderful. Nyceve has commented so much and so rightly about the state of health care in the country and yes, Josh did have insurance that paid for most of it but I have to wonder in complaining about the cost of health care, does anyone think the nurses, clinitions, doctors, surgeons, aides etc. shouldn't be paid?
These people were all wonderful. Especially the nurses on the Cardiac Care floor. The Cardiac Specialist who performed the procedure was available, attentive and consice.
Kudos to the people who work in hospitals. You earn your pay and then some.
Anyone else have a positive story about health care?
