CNN is reporting that
more journalists have been killed in the Iraq war than in the 20 years of Vietnam conflict.
Since U.S. forces and its allies launched their campaign in Iraq on March 20, 2003, 66 journalists and their assistants have been killed, RSF said.
63 were killed in Vietnam.
This is the sort of story, unfortunately, that is going to get some people thinking about what it is that we've really gotten ourselves into. For a long time I've been wondering what the headlines will be like if the death toll in Iraq surpasses that of September 11th (I pray that it does not). Clearly this news is not of the same caliber, but there are some people who just live by numbers and black-and-white comparisons. (After all, this is why "shocking" poll results get so much publicity.)
I think it's sick that I feel like it takes this sort of tragic statistic to make some people "wake up."
It's a quagmire, indeed.
