The political wire reports that a new Rocky Mountain Poll in Arizona's most populous county, finds Sen. John McCain's lead "which was a comfortable 15 to 17 points for most of last and this year, has shrunk significantly."
McCain's lead is now just five points, 43% to 38%.
Key findings: "McCain's narrowing lead traces not to any sudden up-swelling in support for Obama, whose support has hovered around 38 percent for the past year and remains at that level today. Rather, it traces to a decline in support of McCain, especially among men, registered Independents and Latinos. Simultaneously, the proportion of voters who are uncommitted rose to 16 percent from only nine this May and Ralph Nader drew a small but important three percent, mostly from McCain."
I don't know how the McCain camp is going to spin this as good news for them, but I'm sure they will find a way. Nominees usually don't find the most populous county in their home states in play, but with a mere 5 point McCain lead, it does look very much in play. What's even more shocking is that McCain is well under 50 at this point
Does McCain now have to alot resources to his home state? Would the selection of Governor Napolitano as Veep be a possibility now? Would that selection put the McCain camp in full panic mode? I must say I really am enjoying this poll release. I guess we should start looking for even greater attack ads in the coming weeks and months on the part of the McCain wild attack dogs as more desperation sets in.
