(Cross-posted from Obamaism.org)
As foreshadowed in our previous post: it was a pleasure to interview Democratic congressional candidate Darcy Burner at Netroots Nation, but before I relate more about that.....I thought it would be interesting to ask Charlie Brown, who was also at NN08, which Peanuts character Barack Obama most resembled (cf. the cartoon which is also at our previous post): a harmless and amusing question.
However, Mr. Brown made himself hilariously unavailable, with various "reasons", over the several days I told him I was interested in a brief one-minute interview. Among other things, I heard from Brown's campaign staff, after he walked away from me, that he was in a tight race and they had to be careful about message control, or words in that direction. (Should I have gotten a crewcut before talking to him? ...Or was he worried I'd pull the football away like Lucy did?)
(more fun below)
Do tell.
"But if a candidate can't handle a one-minute interview in a friendly venue like Netroots Nation, how can he handle a position in Congress? ??"...
Luckily, Darcy came through for me on basically zero notice: here she is at the netroots candidates event on Friday night 7/18,
, and here the questions and her responses,
Q: What Peanuts character do you think Barack Obama resembles the most?
A: I had never thought of him in that way. [good answer!, if a little dry-- -ed.]
Q. ...How about Linus?
A: I don't think so. Maybe Schroeder--more technically adept. [another good answer! even if I prefer the Linus analogy-ed.]
No puffery from her about being in a "tight race", etc.: she just answered the questions! Impressive. And this after Burner's house was burned, too, which might put some people off their stride, but not her.
So, thanks to my fellow DB. A candidate with not only the steadfastness and intelligence (and eyewear) of her near-namesake Peanuts character Marcie, but many other good qualities besides...
--And in our next post, we consider "Obamaism", not on a "peanuts" level but something more substantive. Stay tuned!!
