Though it may have been unchallenged in his Blender Magazine interview on what's your favorite song, John McCain's explanation of why he loves "Dancing Queen" by ABBA is clearly a lie.
Of his "Dancing Queen" answer, McCain later told the Aspen Institute that
If there is anything I am lacking in, I've got to tell you, it is taste in music and art and other great things in life. I've got to say that a lot of my taste in music stopped about the time I impacted a surface-to-air missile with my own airplane and never caught up again."

ABBA came to America in the 1970's, but it wasn't until 1976 that they released "Dancing Queen".
John McCain had returned from his prisoner of war incarceration three years earlier: 1973. By '76, McCain was commanding officer of the Florida squadron where he enjoyed his greatest command successes--returning to flight rotation a squadron of aging bolt-buckets, while conducting extra-marital affairs on his disfigured first-wife Carol, for which he has since apologized.
It was in 1979 that he began his affair with Cindy, at the height of disco fever. That's probably when he heard "Dancing Queen" played incessantly on the dance floor of Studio 54 or some such place.
This was long after he "impacted a surface-to-air missile with [his government-issue] airplane."
