Sitting here in the big tent the morning after, I have to say that I loved Hillary's speech. It was beautiful, And from the perspective of an Obama supporter, I loved it last night.
I think she could have done more though.
Follow me on the flip.
Two experiences this morning changed my mind.
I was sitting in the hotel lobby on WiFi and watched this movie again.
I don't know that Hillary's speech did much for these people. She breifly spoke to them when she talked about "if you were in this for me..." but I think she could have spoken directly to her supporters more.
Now I know you are going to call me a concern troll, but before you do so, consider this experience I had riding the bus up to the big tent this afternoon. I stepped on and overheard a conversation in progress with a guy and a family of Clinton supporters. Here's a rough transcript. I wasn't wearing a tape recorder though.
"I still think Obama should have picked Hillary Clinton as his VP"
"I think she should have picked her for president"
"Biden got what? 70,000 votes?"
"I think Barack's been listening to his handlers too much. I mean, his problem is that he's inexperienced with things and I think he needs to stop listening to them and go with his gut."
"I think Hillary was so amazing last night at her speech."
"Obama's great with the teleprompter, but once he walks away, its 'uh, uh, uh'"
"Hillary didn't even need a teleprompter. She was looking there every once in a while, but there's a timer there too I think, she might have just been watching that."
Now I completely disagree with almost all of the analysis of that conversation, it is cause for concern. Could Hillary's speech, while amazing and wonderful and magnificent, and everything we could have asked for, not fulfilled its intended purpose?
How do you bring in those people. I don't know? Can you bring them in? That will be one of the questions the Obama people need to ask and answer. I wonder though if Hillary could have spoken more effectively to those supporters yesterday.
Could she? Or has that damage been done?
Let's see how one of those die hard supporters does tonight. Maybe Bubba can get them behind Barack. We'll see tonight from the Big Tent...
