I'm a frequent DK commenter, but I tend to stay away from diaries unless I have some insight that I feel is obvious, but I think everyone on the site has stepped over. Since the posters and diarists here are um... really friggin smart, this rarely happens. Since I've heard a lot of handwringing based on the recent ad that has Hillary's "lifetime of experience" jab, coupled with frequent suggestions that Haillary should be doing something to counter it, I figured I'd point out why that hasn't happened yet.
Two major reasons. First of all, the convention is going on right now. You've got huge ratings, plenty of media attention, pundits are going so far as to analyze Senator Clinton's BODY LANGUAGE in order to find out what she really means during her speeches. Advertising time, if you have not noticed, is rather expensive. If political TV ads are part of an "air war", then the time you've got a convention is unquestioned "air superiority", and running new ads during this time is redundant, not to mention hectic with the busy pre-post convention schedules.
Second, McCain's VP pick still hasn't been announced. With Mitt Romney as an overwhelming favorite at this point, it's probably best to see if they'll walk into that punch before it's thrown, if you get my drift. The most effective response you ccan make will change based on whether McCain picks a primary opponent or someone who's been a surrogate since the jump (especially Ridge or Pawlenty, since Lieberman can't be Vice President. This seems very consistent with Obama's pattern of letting someone attack, gain confidence in that attack when there's no initial response, overreach just a liiiitle bit, and then... BAM. See Tire-Gauge and Annie Oakley Gates for examples.
Kung-Fu, y'all. This is how it's done.
