Wow, big story by Ad Nags in the Sunday NYT on major disruptions in the McCain campaign.
http://www.nytimes.com/...
Now here's a mystery:
Two weeks ago, he publicly disagreed with his own spokeswoman, Jill Hazelbaker, after she used a line of attack against Senator Barack Obama that he had approved after careful strategizing within his campaign. Ms. Hazelbaker raced out of the Virginia campaign headquarters and refused to take Mr. McCain’s calls of apology, aides said, and a plan to have Republican members of Congress use the same critical line about Mr. Obama’s foreign trip fell apart.
OK, now we know the McCain people spend all their time coming up with attack lines and coordinating the Message of the Day with the Republicans in Congress.
But what was the "critical line" that McCain approved, and then disavowed? It's bizarre that the article doesn't report that key fact!
Answer after the jump!
Courtesy of Wonkette, July 17 2008:
Here’s a Fox News clip from today of John McCain’s communications director Jill Hazelbaker, a.k.a. "the poor man’s Dana Perino." She said that Barack Obama is not going to the Middle East to learn anything about the situation On The Ground — a stark contrast to avid listener John McCain, who learned about the two kinds of Muslims during his last trip to the region.
Hazelbaker added that Obama’s trip will be a "first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas," presumably replete with bottle service for all Iranian illicit arms-dealing VIPs. Her remark was so stupid that John McCain — not exactly the greatest "filterer" in politics himself — has disagreed with her and will speak with her about their talking points. He’ll tell her to include this great joke he once heard about a gorilla.
Here's McCain disagreeing with her, Newsweek, July 17:
This morning,McCain communication director Jill Hazelbaker called the Democratic nominee's jaunt a "first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas." (On his bus this afternoon in Kansas City, McCain said he didn't agree with Hazelbaker's remarks and told reporters he would "talk to her.")
I guess he plum forgot he strategized this with Jill and signed off on it! Wow!
We'll be talking about this article for a week!
