We know the GOP is anti-government in most cases and pro-business. And the argument is that because of that, you will have more money in your pocket from tax cuts and lower prices through competition in the market. So when Democrats argue that if you don’t have oversight of business (especially ones that many Americans have retirement revetments in) that business will just take advantage of consumers, workers, and create unsafe products. The GOP will counter that in order for a business to stay in good shape that they have to answer to the consumers who will stop buying their product if it’s too expensive or doesn’t meet their standards.
So lets explore that logic a bit...
So the market is supposed to keep business "honest"? However history shows us then the party that turns its back on the American collective, the will of the people, this democracy that the primary focus business is money and stock prices that short-term strategies take president and long term consumer relationships go to the waist side. So if you hate the government basically you are saying you have little or no respect for it which means, you are more likely to abuse it. Period.
Elected officials have to look longer term and you will find the party who has a deeper respect for the American collective, is less likely to abuse its power than the party who uses government to funnel money to corporations. It’s one thing to be critical of government spending and wasteful programs, and some welfare programs; it’s another thing to use government as a proxy to help your business interests that don’t really help the American people in the end even though the claim is made that "helping business helps the economy". I wish this were true, however normally the businesses that are helped only benefit very few, discourage product innovation, and often times get funneled into some other country and undercut jobs in American.
So over the next 2 months when you hear a republican say they hate government, just confirm with them that they would rather choose money over country. If they choose money then just remind them that they are trading in their vote, and that they better have a hell of a lot of money in their savings account.
