While we wait for the vast majority of journalists to get some backbone and call a Lie a Lie, and a Liar a Liar.
This humble writer would hope the media would take something else the McCain campaign has announced recently very seriously.
I am referring of course to the Governor of Alaska's grasp or lack of it, on what may happen if NATO would engage Russia in war.
While we might comfort ourselves and put her recent statement down to a urgent need to prove her credentials as a possible President, recent experience has taught us not to be so hopeful.
Lets take their world on this one, and agree that during the ABC interview Sarah made a policy announcement. After all we have had no clarification to deny it isn't.
How many of us made assumptions about Bush being just a bit of a idiot before 2000. To quote the president
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
During "the only" interview on ABC, Governor Palin called on NATO to invite Georgia and the Ukraine into the organization that is based on the fundamental policy of collective defence whereby its member states agree to defend and engage in response to an attack by any external party on any of its members.
Simply put if Georgia was a member on 8/8/8, the US would now be at war with Russia. Now to be pragmatic, does it really matter who started this border dispute, even if it was totally Russia's fault, and their is massive evidence it was actual Georgia who started it, does it make sense that the US risk everything over it?
NATO to its defense insists that new members must have settled any border disputes before admission. But the McCain Palin ticket wants NATO to make an exception in the case of Georgia.
I can only assume Sarah believes those leaders in Europe, namely Germany and France are spineless. We can forgive Sarah and many Americans for this misunderstanding since European History is not taught very well. She might not know a small conflict in the same area as Georgia resulted in the loss of 12 million lives, and much suffering. World War I, the War to End all Wars, if only that was true. And if only it was true that Russia would be restrained if it risked direct conflict with the United States, in these situations the Europeans understand that wishful thinking is just not sane.
I prefer not be ambiguous when we describe Sarah Palin's position, the Governors policy is Suicidal.
"We cannot repeat the Cold War,'' she said, but was asked if the result of Georgia and Ukraine being in the Western alliance could lead to armed conflict with Russia.
"Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.''
The last thing we would need to worry about is a "Cold War", because this policy could push the world into a "Hot War". Forecast: A maximum of 500 million degrees Fahrenheit or 300 million degrees Celsius for our European friends.
World War III will cost many more than 12 million lives, and many of those could well escalate to include parts of the United States, even Alaska, actually especially Alaska.
Lets call a spade a spade, a liar a liar, a suicidal idiot a suicidal idiot.
