Unbelievable. Despite an ominous statement from the National Weather Service that people remaining in Galveston during Hurricane Ike face "certain death", the Houston Chronicle reports that 1,000 prisoners in the Galveston jails remain where they are - yes, IN Galveston - for "security reasons."
Don't let this become another Katrina. Evacuate the prisoners now!
You can find the story on the Galveston prisoners here:

According to CNN, the last time the National Weather Service used the terms "certain death" for a storm was for Hurricane Katrina. This is obviously a serious and dangerous storm.
I grew up near Galveston and I am fearing for my family who remain there despite my repeated pleas for them to get out. (That is a story for another time; my family refuses to listen to reason). But at least they are not IN Galveston where officials have told people to "get out or die."
Despite these alarming and unequivocal warnings, 1000 prisoners remain in Galveston jails! There are no words for this utter failure of the officials to act - I can't believe that Galveston officials and FEMA officials would sacrifice the lives of people just because they are in jail. Are they not worth our compassion? Are they not worth saving?
I am sorry that I do not have more to say and that this is essentially a rambling in-artful rant - I am simply dumbfounded.
I just want to retitrate: do not let Galveston become another Katrina - evacuate the prisoners now! That is a demand to you, Ms. Mayor, Governor Perry, and President Bush. Where is your compassionate conservatism? It is the most weak and vulnerable who deserve it.
Praying for all in the Galveston/Houston area.
