My 89 year old Mother, a Goldwater republican, announced she is voting for Obama. A low information voter, she watches an hour of network news before Jeapordy everynight. She mingles with other over 80 year women in her assisted living environment.
Why is this remarkable? This is a woman who wept for two days after JFK won the election because it was "the beginning of the end." She believes FDR was sinister in "foisting government" off onto Americans. She required me to read "I'd rather be Right" in the fourth grade. The only time she did not vote republican was in 2000--she liked Ralph Nadar.
Her lips are no stranger to racial and ethnic slurs: to wit, she liked "that dego from New York" (AKA noun, verb, 911)in the primary.
So, I was stunned. Dazed, I asked "How did you come to decide Obama would be good?" Her response, "McCain is lying and he is playing tricks with that Palin girl. She is not President material."
THere you go. THere is hope.
