Sarah Palin is a member of the radical probirth group which is euphemistically named Feminists for Life. The groups objectives are so far out of the mainstream of American belief that it must reframe its message to make it appear acceptable while its true, frightening, positions are barely beneath the surface.
What is Feminists for Life's position on contraception?
Feminists for Life's mission is to address the unmet needs of women who are pregnant or parenting. Preconception issues including abstinence and contraception are outside of our mission. Some FFL members and supporters support the use of non-abortifacient contraception while others oppose contraception for a variety of reasons. FFL is concerned that certain forms of contraception have had adverse health effects on women.
"Abortifacient contraception" is code on the right for the Pill and IUD.
The Bush administration recently defined "abortifacient contraception" in such a way that the pill, IUD and morning after pill would be included.
The proposal defines abortion as follows: "any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."
The right to effective birth control is in danger now on many fronts, so the risk a President Palin would pose is far from hypothetical.
A growing number of doctors and pharmacists are now refusing to dispense it, on the grounds that it is actually a form of abortion.
.....
At first these were just isolated cases, mostly in the Midwest. But recently they have increased dramatically.
Pro-choice groups now call it a significant and growing trend. Lisa Boyce of Planned Parenthood in Wisconsin says it is a conscious extension of the abortion debate.
"They've done so much with outlawing and restricting access to abortion that they've set their sights on birth control because there's nothing else really they can do to further restrict abortion here in Wisconsin," Ms Boyce says.
