Elizabeth Drew, author of the 2002 hagiography Citizen McCain, apparently has a case of buyer's remorse for having purchased the bullshit package of lies that John McCain is somehow a principled, honorable man who always stands up for what he believes in.
In a piece at Politco, Drew recounts her evolution from a starry-eyed believer in the myth of maverickism into a cold realist faced with McSame's duplicity:
McCain’s recent conduct of his campaign – his willingness to lie repeatedly (including in his acceptance speech) and to play Russian roulette with the vice-presidency, in order to fulfill his long-held ambition – has reinforced my earlier, and growing, sense that John McCain is not a principled man. In fact, it’s not clear who he is.
Reading this piece was eerily familiar to me. As a lifelong Democrat who has never once even considered voting for a Republican, I recall feeling, 5 or 6 years ago, that McCain was probably about the only Republican that I could stand the thought of being president, that even though he was misguided in his party affiliation, he was fundamentally a decent man, a 'straigh shooter.' Of course I've long since been disabused of such foolish notions...but then again I never wrote a book praising this man's integrity.
I have a feeling this isn't the last we'll hear of this. If the mainstream media keeps doing its job and calling McCain/Palin on their bald-faced lies, this sort of sentiment should trickle down to the electorate in general. One hopes, anyway...piece at Politco,
