Ironworkers Local 495 sent out a local union mailing to their members last Tuesday. Members toiled for hours stuffing packets and grappling with the stapler, but it’s all worth it to have the satisfaction of knowing that the local is doing its part in this election by reaching out to its members. Local union mailings are a critical component to the Labor 2008 program. Kudos Ironworkers Local 495!
"We’re sending out a mailing to our members on the candidates that we have endorsed and related information that they should be aware of," says Jerry Romero, Business Agent for Ironworkers Local 495. "We strongly support Barack Obama for president. He believes in unions and the Employee Free Choice Act, and he opposes NAFTA. We want to make sure that our members support him."

"I believe in Obama. I believe that he will give back to the working class," says Mary Polnaszek, Ironworkers Local 495. "I’ve raised two kids as a single mother, and I’ve been working at the union for 30 years. I wouldn’t have been able to raise my kids without my union job. Even now, I am lower middle class, but I want a candidate in office who will make it fair for all Americans."
"As a 34-year ironworker, I know that it’s important that our young people understand the importance of putting the right person in office," says Rick Meyer, Apprentice Coordinator for Ironworkers Local 495. "We need pro-labor candidates who are against NAFTA act and who will help unions and working class people."
"Many of us have bee with the union for three years or more and we’ve seen how unions have shaped New Mexico," says Martin Padilla. "There are certain candidates who are pro-labor, and we want to let our members know who they are."
