The whole focus on the wobbly financial markets and the debate drama (aka McCain' early pull out) is a great opportunity - for people do get things "under the radar" of main stream media.
A few things I have noticed, unrelated to the current financial situation that seem to benefit from less media attention:
- North Korea removed nuclear plant security seals
- Venezuela the new Cuba? Russian Navy shows "Unprecedented since the cold war" Russian navy ships head to maneuvers in Venezuela
- House passes a record spending bill for the Pentagon
- US Army has redeployed a division to .... THE U.S.A. - to handle domestic unrest...
What else has been happening during this window of opportunity? (more details and links below the fold...)
- North Korea removed nuclear plant security seals
At the reclusive nation's request, the International Atomic Energy Agency has removed surveillance equipment and seals from the Yongbyon nuclear facility, agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said.
The move clears the way for North Korea to reintroduce nuclear material to the facility. The North has told the IAEA that it will do that in a week or so.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog will no longer have access at Yongbyon and will not be able to monitor any activities at the nuclear reprocessing facility.
- Venezuela the new Cuba? Russian Navy shows "Unprecedented since the cold war" Russian navy ships head to maneuvers in Venezuela
A Russian navy squadron set off for Venezuela Monday, an official said, in a deployment of Russian military power to the Western Hemisphere unprecedented since the Cold War.
The Kremlin recently has moved to intensify contacts with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American nations amid increasingly strained relations with Washington after last month's war between Russia and Georgia. During the Cold War, Latin America became an ideological battleground between the Soviet Union and the United States.
- House passes a record spending bill for the pentagon
Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group, discovered 2,322 pet projects totaling $6.6 billion. That included 2,025 in the defense portion alone that cost a total of $4.9 billion
