I just spent forty-five minutes reading various articles in which alleged Conservatives attempt to blame the failure of Washington Mutual on the ethnic diversity of its employees, particularly, apparently, a significant number of Hispanics.
My jaw is now bruised from hitting my desk when I realized these articles were not political satires, but serious opinions.
I am now faced with a daunting task. Do I write these a**holes off as abberations in the evolution of homo sapiens, or do I get upset, as the world failed to do during Hitler's rise to power using Jews as a scapegoat for all the ills of Germany?
If I had heard these rantings while walking past a facility for the mentally impaired, I might not flinch. Had I heard these statements whispered while passing a dark alleyway at night, I might have just hurried past. However, these animal gruntings were made by organisms posing as people who have regular mainstream media access, and were, in fact, published in that mainstream.
Although I am a fierce supporter and defender of the first amendment, it merely gives all citizens the right to speak their mind. It does not require that a public pulpit, soapbox or amplified microphone be provided them. Hatred has no place in the United States. It has no place in honest, intellectual debate and discussion between humans.
When Senator Obama became the nominee of a major American political party for President of the United States, I was elated. I rejoiced.Millions of Americans could finally relate, feel a part of . . . an integral part of the fabric of this country. They could be proud of who they were and optimistic about the future.
Last year, a student in one of my classes expressed his lack of interest in the American Political System because it was the sole province of old white men. At last, I had an answer for him! My country was actually making progress, moving forward, willing to recognize the potential contributions of all of its citizens, without regard to race, sex, religion, etc.
Now to face the vomitus spewed forth by these demented creatures, I can only conclude that the sickness is still virulent. It has not infected us all, but remains just below the surface, ready to be released in case a national crisis makes it easy. The good employees of Washington Mutual, merely followed the directives of those above them. The executives who made the policy are to blame. The legislators who dissolved the regulations put in place in the 1930's and after to prevent just these events from transpiring are to blame.
Stupidity is repeating the same action and expecting different results. The Deregulation Free Marketers brough us this production, and you have to buy a ticket whether you want to see it or not. Welcome America, to the Twenty-first century, where we face the same social diseases of centuries past, brought to us by those without the intellectual capacity or honesty to seek true causes for problems, but merely look around for someone to blame. Remember, when you point one finger at someone else, there are usually three pointing back at you.
