Journalist Chris Matthews, watching Obama get off an airplane wearing sunglasses, suggested that it made him look "elite". Republicans have been trying, rather unsuccessfully, to pin the "elite" label on Obama since he started running. My guess is that it worked for Kerry, it'll work for Obama, since McCain is using many of Bush's former cronies in his campaign, and they are struggling to come up with any news ideas.
BUT I DIGRESS... so, if it were up to sunglasses, aren't we all elite?
Amazing radio personality Thom Hartmann, who broadcasts on Air America Radio out of Portland, Oregon, wrote a piece today reframing the weak Republican "elite" argument. Here is my response to this concept:
If being elite means...
If being elite means having a President who began in humble roots and went to Harvard, then bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who went back to his community to help people in need, then I say, bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who drives one car, and owns one home, then I say, bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who gave a ground breaking, insightful, and inspiring speech on race in America, then I say, bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who not only reads the Constitution, but taught it to law students, I say, bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who truly believes in the Preamble of the Constitution, which promises that everyone in America deserves a more perfect union, not just the rich, the corporations, the majority, but everyone, then we say, bring him on!
If being elite means having a President who listens to everyone, represents everyone, and hears everyone's voice, then we say, bring him on!
I'll take Obama, with his intellect, amazing wife, and vision for our country any day ... sunglasses be damned!
