(Please note I scrolled through the diary list before starting this and did not see it already diaried. Have mercy on me, this is only my second diary.)
There is an article in the LA Progressive that features residents in Alaska who know or have been around Sarah Palin telling about things they have witnessed her say or do. The article begins with a sentence uttered by Palin to describe Obama's win over Clinton: "So Sambo beat the bitch!" This was apparently declared very loudly, without concern for who might hear it, in a restaurant while at dinner with some GOPers.
Please go read the article in its entirety here; I will post a few bits below the fold.
UPDATE: I feel compelled to post a "disclaimer": The quotes and anecdotes in this article are all hearsay. There's no proof, a la George Allen and "macacca." I am only posting it because I read it and thought it warranted reading. I don't for a second suggest we move on this or anything. Just to be read. It is hearsay with no real proof. But it is interesting hearsay, and if Sarah Palin indeed has a habit of these sorts of things, it shoudln't be too difficult to catch it at some point. But I take this with a grain of salt. Just putting it out there since I saw it. Thanks.
First off, I will post a bit about the LA Progressive - it is not a well known news source and basically serves as an alternative local news outlet for the Los Angeles area. I have read several stories on the site and they appear to be reputable - however, I have no idea if this article is true or not. Let's hope these stories are followed up on, but knowing what we know about Palin, it's not hard to imagine they are true. About the LA Progressive, from the mission statement on their website:
The LA Progressive reports and comments on issues of political, social, and cultural consequence. We gather news that is relevant to the diverse communities of Greater Los Angeles. Here you’ll find articles that advocate progressive positions and policies designed to build a more just and equitable society. If you’re interested in what’s going on in Britney Spears or Paris Hilton’s life, you’ve come to the wrong place. The LA Progressive exists to provide a venue for expression to the region’s dispossessed and powerless and those who champion their causes.
The article contains quotes and anecdotes from Alaskans who know Palin and/or have been around her to witness some of her extreme behavior.
Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, "darkie musical" swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as "Arctic Arabs" – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful "mukluks" along with the totally unimaginative "f**king Eskimo’s," according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.
The bulk of the article mostly contains information that Daily Kos readers already know - her "enemies list," her trying to fire the librarian who wouldn't help her ban books, etc. But there are a few bits, like the extremely racist quotes above, that should be brought to light. If George Allen can get destroyed for his "macacca" moment, I think "Sambo" is right up there.
The last paragraph of the piece sums it up nicely:
"Sambo beat the bitch" may be everyday language up in the bush. Whether it – and the outlook, politics and worldview Palin reflects when she says such things in public – should be part of a presidential campaign is another thing altogether. The comment says as much about McCain as it does about Palin, and it says a lot of things about Americans who overlook such statements (as well as her record) and vote anyway for McCain.
I hate jumping on the "let's bash Sarah Palin with a diary" bandwagon, but I didn't see this diaried about yet and thought it might be of interest.
