When I first heard about Gerarldine Ferraro it was in the primary race between Clinton and Obams. Her name was vaguely familiar to me but I couldnt put my finger on it. So like anyone from my generation I googled her and found out her significance in the 1984 race between Mondale and Reagan. So imagine my surprise when the repubs selected Ms. Palin. I thought hmmm...historians are right. History does repeat itself. Granted, there are some major differences between Ms. Palin and Ms. Ferraro's stance on issues facing women. But the politics of the pick closely mirror eachother.
Anyone interested in recent history in regards to suprise vp picks?? well its just one click away. Take a look at Geraldine Ferraro (yes one of Obama's supporters arch nemesis in the primary) wikipedia page. More than a few things strike me as oddly familiar. The fact that Mondale wanted to shake up the race and it was viewed as a gambled that payed off, but not in the long run The fact that Ms. Ferraro was considered a rising star in her own party. The fact that originally it rallied the democratic base....and yes the fact that a scandal in regards to her hubbie's finances tarnished her shine. Also, the fact that on election day she didnt matter much and good ole Ronny and Bushie senior won in a landslide.
I'm not saying this will end in the same way but it does a lot to calm nerves among democrats supporting Barack Obama.
One more thing..I find it quite interesting that Ms. Ferrraro became well known to another generation, mine, because of her remarks to a Southern California Paper this past primary season. There are no coincidences and I hope that BO supporters take notice, take a breath, and relax...its all been done before. The task before BO hasnt changed in spite of Ms. Palin. Convince white working class men and some women that he indeed can be trusted as the first black man in the Oval Office. No small task indeed but one that will not be overshadowed by McCain and his stunts, no matter how many times he tries.
Sorry one more thought...Isn't is interesting that McCain by choosing Palin admits his fear that Mr. Obama CAN and WIll achieve this task. Its time we start believing.
