Are we really surprised? I'm not.
Bright and early here in Philadelphia, though it’s actually pretty cloudy out and humid. Coming up from SEPTA this morning, front page news on the free daily METRO announces that "Young GOP leader is ousted for racist rant." Subheading: "Head of Pa. group resigns after Facebook comments on Obama."
Thanks to thepennslyvaniaprogressive, this kid's racist statements were what got him put on the front page of the METRO, which is handed out to everyone that rides public transportation here in Philadelphia and surrounding counties.
This is exactly why diversity and multicultural issues are needed and are taught in school, particularly in college. I remember groaning when I had to take "Multicultural Issues in Criminal Justice" at Alvernia, which is not far from Kutztown University here in Pennsylvania. I didn’t need to buy the book. Growing up in this area has made a good portion of issues become common sense to me, though I think if a person has a healthy respect towards others in general, a person can avoid being insulting. Still, ignorance of what is offensive needs to be educated and clearly, this kid didn't get enough of it.
The article goes on to say that the guy wrote "And man, if sayin' someone has large lips is a racial slur, then we're ALL in trouble."
Ha. Well, guess who's in trouble? Not the rest of us in this case, though figuratively we are. This guy just proves that there's still a lot of CHANGE that needs to be made and that we need to keep hammering away at achieving it, regardless of how defeated we might feel. Somehow, I don't think McSame will be able, let alone have a desire to, bring about the change any self-respecting progressive is working for. Sounds like this election is going to get nasty and it's really unfortunate if that's the case.
On a smaller note, this also just has to make me chuckle for a few reasons. One, my brother was big in the College Republicans and actually went around from college to college on PA to start up chapters. I wonder if he knows this guy. Second, it just goes to show people are so stupid to say this kind of crap on the internet and think it won't bite them in the ass later. Same thing with any blog or MySpace type of site. Sure, we have the freedom to say what we want and that particularly goes for the internet, but there's always consequences, including legal ones.
