What signs have been appearing that the neocons have lost their grip on reality? Is it their refusal to try something different when their dogma has failed them? Is it their favorite recent President not understanding his place in history?
For me, it was seeing their spokesnewsmedia turning into the Weekly World News.
Folks-
I'd been getting the feeling for some time that the neo-conservative movement was beginning to lose it. They were (are) sticking to their mantra of lower taxes, less government, and less corporate oversight well past the point when it was obvious that none of it was working. Their most recent (and only Neocon) President seems to think that he's going to be exonerated historically from all of the things he's done to the country and the world.
However, the one really obvious clue to me that they were losing it was when...well, let me get to that.
One of my co-workers is really conservative. He seems to think that he's getting the debate going by bringing up his political views all the time, when in reality all he's doing is trying to brag about how he's always right. I'm sure this is a totally unique situation that none of you have ever had to deal with. ;) He often brings up the website of Fox "News" at work on one of the public computers. A few days ago he brought it up, and I would have ignored it as I usually do, but he had to mention the headline. Instead of me telling you what it said, I'm going to post a screenshot of it here (click it for a larger version):
Yes, indeed it asks "Inaugural UFO?" I thought for the life of me that it was a parody site, like the Onion, or that he had somehow wandered over to the Weekly World News. But here he was, trying to convince us that aliens were watching Mr. Obama's inauguration, and it couldn't be something else because, somehow, from this quick 2D video coverage, some "expert" had concluded that the object was going over 2,000 MPH. There it was--the ultimate reason why his party isn't still in control of the House, Senate, and White House: Aaaaaaaaaaaliyuuuuuunnnnns. Yep, Mr. Obama is going to be the Pro-Extraterrestrial president. In favor of really illegal aliens jumping over the ultimate border.
If you do bother to go over to Fox "News" and read the article, it doesn't quite come off that way. But it sure seems like my Neocon co-worker has bought into it.
It really is sad to watch the wheels come off of their cart like this. I just wanted us to win the election, and actually get stuff done. I wanted them to be laughing stocks for their economic and political views, not because they're slipping over into general insanity. This is actually pitiful. I take no joy in this. Okay, maybe just a little bit. Maybe we should socialize the mental health system just to help them readjust to the community at large and help them to become well adjusted, working members of society instead of these helpless conspiracy theorists.
