To the diarist who does not know how to use Google.
The NY times may have misrepresented Geithner by stating that:
The new financial industry rescue plan, to be outlined in broad terms on Monday in a speech by the Treasury secretary, Timothy F. Geithner, will not require banks to increase their lending. That is despite criticism that institutions that already received money from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, either hoarded it or used the funds to acquire other banks.
An anonymous source refuted the NY Times article.
Geithner, during a briefing with House Democrats, was asked about a New York Times report that the Obama administration would not require banks to increase their lending as part of revamped government effort to restore stability to the financial industry.
According to the sources, who asked not to be identified, Geithner said: "We are not doing what they wrote ... Institutions that get assistance will have to participate in loan modifications and meet other standards that we set."
And as an added bonus.
"Public assistance is a privilege, not a right," the sources said Geithner told lawmakers.
I take no position on the bailout plan but would like to set the facts straight. The news stories are obviously conflicting on what Geithner actually said or plans on doing. Perhaps we should wait till the details come out to pass judgment. Daily Kos is, in fact, a reality based community.
