As we take note on this day of the achievements of Darwin I find myself reflecting on the compromise reached by Congress over the stimulus bill.
We know after more than 20 years of experimentation that Reaganomics failed---this being the amount of time Darwin took to reflect on his evidence before publication. We know that the ideology of tax cuts for the wealthy, trickle down economics, and do-nothing government has led us to the current catastrophe. So why, why do we entertain these foolish ideas and incorporate them into this compromise? This is tantamount to taking Intelligent Design seriously and compromising the teaching of Evolution in schools so that we can appease the fools who espouse such nonsense. That people can't understand that a "theory" based on science is also true is only further evidence that we don't need compromise, we need better education.
I understand Obama's pragmatism and realpolitick and getting something is better than nothing. But that doesn't lessen the folly of compromising with truth or why appeasing those who refuse to learn from their failures can't make for good policy.
