I was discussing music tonight with my brother, two songs came into prominence in our discussion. I'd like to hear what those of you in the know have to say on the topic.
The first song is "Freight Train" by Elizabeth Cotten. The mother of Jimmy Hendrix (not literally but figuratively) since she was the first star musician that was a self taught guitar player that played the guitar upside down and backwards, like Jimmy did. She was a cotten picker, she played the right handed guitar lefty. When she was 12 she wrote a song that is still revered today.
Enjoy it!
the other song is on the flip
The second song is by Tom Waits. It's a song about finding yourself and it uses the train as an analogy. It's the Train Song. The version on the album Big Time has a wonderfully entertaining story about a Union Soldier...sadly that version is not on UToob. Here's the song:
These two songs define life for me. A train to take me away. I left my home town 20+ years ago and now I find myself coming back. A train to bring be back.
What a wild trip it has been.
As Frank Zappa said "Home is where the heart is."
Has your life taken you away and brought you home? Mine did.
