When Ronald Reagan tried to lower inflation and raise employment, many Democrats in Congress supported him. When Dwight Eisenhower wanted a national road system which was the largets public works expenditure in history up to that time, Democrats were in the majority and, led by Lyndon Johnson, they supported him. When Harry Truman defended Europe against the Soviets and vowed to re-build it, Republicans in Congress backed him. In those days, folks (even dense Congressmen)knew that we were all in this together. But the other party is becoming so insular, so out of touch that they may have already doomed themselves to minority status for many years.
And now, NOT on another topic:
What did you make out of the Republican "standing or sitting" decisions last evening?
I thought that the fact that so many of them stood up last night and publicly applauded so many things they oppose shows that they are a gaggle of scared geese. Be wrong, but be proud of it. Don't hide when the public can actually see you.
They applauded "no torture", saving the American car industry, freeing ourselves from the domination of foreign oil, taking away tax breaks from companies that ship jobs overseas, a national health care plan, and the re-regulation of financial institutions. WHEN THEY HAD THE CHANCE OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS, THEY VOTED AGAINST EVERY ONE OF THESE THINGS. And when they had complete power from 2001-2007, they did NOTHING on any of them but worsen the underlying problem.
But I do give them credit because they did have the guts to stay seated on the issue of closing Guantanamo and when the President thanked the Democratic Congress for extending SCHIP coverage to 7 million more children in families with working parents who have little or no health insurance.
See, standing or sitting, we know where these guys stand.
