Prop 8 supporters seem to have opened an interesting window by shutting the door on Gay marriages here in California. Instead of trying to approve another Gay marriage proposition in the state, anti prop 8 activists have proposed taking the state out of the marriage business altogether! There is a movement afoot to make California the first civil unions only state! D'oh!
More after the break...
For those of you who don't know, I have never been in favor of Gay marriage; however, I have never been in favor of Heterosexual marriage either. I think marriage is an arcane, pre-historic business deal meant to protect property rights and misogyny. In order for humanity to evolve, we need to move past these rites and find a new way to express interpersonal unions. Having said that, the first steps to this brave new world seem to have been taken here in California.
Prop 8 passed in a 52-48% decision by California voters last fall. Polling now shows that the state is almost evenly divided. http://www.presstelegram.com/... There has been talk of trying to overturn Prop 8 in 2010 as many feel that it would be repealed given all of the attention to the issue since Prop 8 passed. However, a movement is afoot to get the state out of the marriage business altogether.
The anti Prop 8 forces have taken a new tack in the ongoing fight for equality in California. Instead of trying to get marriage rights for the GLBQTI community, they have started the process to end marriage for everyone. The community organizers have been given permission to collect signatures to put a proposition on the fall ballot to end marriage in California. They need to gather 700,000 signatures by August in order to make the deadline. Somehow, I don't think this is what the hyper-religious community had in mind when they decided to go after the definition of marriage, but I'm happy with the outcome.
