I'm sure we all remember the reports about the Republicans starting a listening tour in a Pizzaria this weekend. I for one had a good time mocking it. Well, Rush Limbaugh, the de facto leader of the Republican Party apparently came out on Monday and said the Republicans don't NEED a listening tour. What the Republicans NEED to do is get back to telling people they know what's best for them. Well, this morning Eric Cantor went on Morning Joe and decided, that no, the "GOP" isn't going to have a listening tour. The Huffington Post has the progression in video form here.
Now look, I understand the GOP is in the wilderness right now. They don't know where they are going, they are convinced the country AGREES with their obstructionist ways, and the harder they fight to hold on to their bankrupt ideas, the more fun we get to have.
Personally, I'm wondering why the elected Republican leaders do so much to kiss Limbaugh's ass, you'd think they'd feel like they have more power than he does as Rush is just an entertainer.
I almost feel bad for them because they CLEARLY have no idea what to do. On every issue that matters, they have no ideas. They are like yo Sammity Sam [Yosemite Sam, thanks for the spelling in the comments! LOL, just think of it as the Michael Steele spelling] trying to hold on to a ledge while Bugs Bunny releases his fingers one by one before he falls off.
Then you have the nightly skewering by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert:
They are increasingly becoming the "White Male" party as evidenced by a new Gallup Poll that shows women increasingly identify as Democrats, and even the White Men are no longer identifying themselves as Republicans.
Among women, Democrats maintain a solid double-digit advantage in party identification over Republicans, 41% to 27%. In contrast, men are equally divided in their party loyalty between Republicans (28%) and Democrats (30%), and are currently most likely to say they are politically independent (40%)...
And Gallup points out that the only silver lining for the Republicans is the fact that the white men who are leaving, aren't necessarily joining the Democratic Party.
On top of that, Younger People aren't exactly flocking to the "GOP" even with Meghan McCain and the Congressman with the washboard abs (although that guy is really dense, did you see his interview on Colbert? It was painful), we know which party is really working with our futures in mind (no matter how much republicans whine about Obama giving away our futures, well Obama wouldn't have to do what he's doing if the "GOP" didn't fuck up so royally).
But I don't feel sorry for them yet, I'm having too much fun watching the destruction. While I do think it would be better for the country to have more than one party with GOOD ideas, it's not good for the country to have a party putting forward ideas and another party trying to reclaim its faded glory.
At the same time, we have to make sure we don't get over confident, we have to remain as vigilant as ever and make sure that we continue to push Democrats in the right direction, we're already seeing them backslide to the old way of doing things where the people with the money are the people who have the most seats at the proverbial table, and that's not cool. Especially with all of the big fights like health care, climate change, and education that must be dealt with in addition to the wars and economy.
