Well, if the bailout heist, the criminal cover-up of bankster fraud, the escalation in Afghanistan, the exclusion of single-payer, and the continued support for Turbo Timmy Geithner and Larry "The Chins" Summers didn't already put me in the "disapprove" column, this definitely does:
The Obama administration is preparing to revive the system of military commissions established at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, under new rules that would offer terrorism suspects greater legal protections, government officials said.
The rules would block the use of evidence obtained from coercive interrogations, tighten the admissibility of hearsay testimony and allow detainees greater freedom to choose their attorneys, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Story from the Washington Post
While the "final decision" has not yet been made, the plan only requires the approval of President George W. Obama:
A White House official said no final decision has been made, and one source involved in the discussions said the plan awaits Obama's approval.
Oh, but that's only the half of it. Under the new imperial decrees, the government would be allowed to admit hearsay evidence - more commonly referred to as "rumors" and/or "second-hand bullshit" - provided that the government deems it to be reliable:
Under the administration's rule changes, hearsay evidence would be admissible if a judge determines it is reliable, officials said.
The ACLU's executive director, Anthony Romero, summed it up succinctly, saying the George W. Obama administration's decision to rape the Constitution sideways with "hearsay" bullshit non-evidence is:
"A greater travesty than Bush administration justice."
So the good news is, evidence obtained via torture is not admissible. The bad news is that this effectively allows arbitrary detention of anyone the Emperor/President deems a terrorist, and then conviction in a kangaroo court based on hearsay evidence the government says is legit.
Another unnamed administration official was quoted as saying: "C'mon man, just trust us - when have we EVER lied to you before?!"
I'll admit, I was never the most enthusiastic Obama supporter, but this is a shock indeed. Never did I imagine that I'd be pining for the days of Bush League Justice. I don't even know what to say here. If this does indeed turn out to be a correct report, this is an outright betrayal by President Obama - of his supporters, of the Constitution, and of the United States.
This must not stand. This shall not stand. It is utterly unacceptable on every possible level. It is a gross violation of the Constitution and Obama's oath of office. It is an affront to everything the United States has stood for, inherently and historically.
Just... Fucking no! No, absolutely not! Goddamn it, that's enough! Are we just going to fucking sit here as our Republic is destroyed from within?! Fucking... FUCK!
