Senators voted against funding the closing of Guantanamo today by a margin of 90-6.
Why? Because of mendacious statements made by people like FBI Director Robert Mueller who warned that moving those SUSPECTS (detainee is a GWB propaganda term) to the US would create the risk of some nebulous "potential for individuals undertaking attacks in the United States". This fearmongering at it's face is silly. What are suspects (again not Convicted terrorists) going to blow up from prison?
According to AP:
Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the second-in-command among Democrats, pointed out that no one has ever escaped from a federal "supermax" prison and that 347 convicted terrorists are among those held in them.
But Cowards are afraid! And if they are cynically pretending to be afraid then double shame on them.
American use to be a beacon, not just to the rest of the world but also to it's own citizens. One generally never had to fear arrest without a reason of the law. But now a single man(The President) only has to point his finger at someone and say that person is a Terrorist and viola that person can now be "detained" without due judical process for the rest of their lives. Think it can't happen to a US citizen? What about Vincente Padilla? That "America" is not the one known as "the land of the free and the home of the brave". That "america" (little a intentional) is the land of cowards.
And Does the White house know what the Presidents job is? Not if you ask Robert Gibbs.
Again via AP:
After the Senate vote, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, "The president understands that his most important job is to keep the American people safe and that he is not going to make any decision or any judgment that imperils the safety of the American people."
When the President is inaugurated he takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. THAT is his most important job.
I did not vote for legislators to dismantle the USA by turning it into the USSA. I am angry at the cowardly fear displayed by our congress. And I am livid at the cynical use of fearmongering by it's members who do not tell the truth. And wouldn't it be nice if Democrats would do what they were told by the people to do and stand up to lying cowards and say "No I will not be afraid and I will not transform America into a lawless Gulag!"
I hope that the congress can overcome its fear and do the right thing, the American thing and give the Suspects in Guantanamo their fair day in court(for tomorrow anyone of us could become a suspect). If they are guilty, prove it and find them so. If they cannot be PROVEN guilty then stop the miscarriage of justice and release them. That would be the "American" thing to do.
