Obama and the House are, despite the odds, heading towards an actual vote on healthcare reform.
But the Senate seems bent on taking their summer break before taking it up.
So what if--just for the sake of the argument--the leadership actually showed some leadership and said: "every day we delay passage of this critical measure is a day that more Americans will die unnecessarily, and a day that more Americans spend unnecessarily unemployed. Therefore, the Senate will stay in session until this legislation is passed."
It would be a beautiful thing. Let the Republicans filibuster in favor of higher death rates and high unemployment. Don't think it would take very long to get 60 votes for cloture after a day or two of postponed recess.
And we know, by the time we get to recess, every ounce of effort on the part of the GOP, the insurance industry, big pharma and more will paint this as the biggest threat to America since the Soviets, or Al Qaeda, or the Hessian forces massing in New Jersey...
You get the picture.
