Much talk has been made of the seeming reluctance to start the war crimes prosecutions, lock up the criminals, and generally make the world a better place. I mean, things are so obvious, we get two or three diaries a day complainning about this. Well, fellow Kossacks, don't blame the president, blame the congressional class of 1994. Follow me and see why...
We all know that after Bill Clinton got elected, there were congresspeople that actually said, and I paraphrase, "we hate him so much we're going to do anything to get him out of office". And thus began, or extended, if the reports are accurate, the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" that goes on even today.
But we won, you say. President Obama kicked righeous ass left and right, you say. Most of the class of 94 has been disgraced and voted out, you say. All true, but it's what they and their allies in the media did that's relevant.
As one diarist (apologies for forgetting who) explained how Faux News destroyed journalistic integrity and the image of the National News Media, so the class of 94 destroyed the prosecutorial process. By going after President Clinton the way they did and for what he did, the class of 94 tarnished the impeachment acts. This unfortunately is why Pelosi said "impeachment was off the table" in 2006. I bet she would have loved to say "I'd love to do it, but they f--ed up the whole thing so now it only looks like payback."
If president Obama would have gone great guns and started the prosecutions right away, the national meme would have been one of political paybacks, not the depths of criminality of the previous administration. And it would have almost guaranteed Republican gains in the congress in 2010 and a strong challenge in 2012. In addition, when the Republicans return to power (let's face it, there's no such thing as a permanent majority), they would do the same things to us, EVEN IF there were no crimes committed, therefore starting that vicious cycle other countries have.
So therefore, look to the bigger chessboard and follow the president's "slowly, slowly catchee monkey" approach and see the moves. As things drip drip out into the light of day, even the "mainstream" media will start to ask about why there are no prosecutions and will write our meme for us. Then we strike.
I hope.
