It seems like the entire point of having certain medications prescription only is that the supervision of a medical doctor is necessary because of the dangers involved. If this is the case, shouldn't the marketing at the very least be restricted to the doctors.
Of course, one could argue, even that should be eliminated, because doctors learn about new drugs while during their required continuing education, so there is no need to inform them of the benefits of a drug. Considering the problems regarding so-called T&A sales, that is a decent point.
This would probably cut down on marketing costs for the entire industry. Even if it wasn't completely necessary, each company would feel like they have to advertise just to keep up with their competitors, a classic collective action problem.
Perhaps they would be able to spend more on R&D, or barring that, reduce their prices.
