Alright, I won't go on for too long. Much has been made about the Birthers, and the Deathers, and the conspiracy theories that are only around because Republicans think you're stupid. Such conspiracies, even on the surface, are totally nuts. Of course the public would be against killing old people, which would be why the professional liars actually started this nonsense in the first place. But apparently nobody who buys into this garbage asks themselves "why would anybody be for proposals that would kill Grandpa?" It's sheer lunacy even on this level, but that's not even the biggest problem with this argument.
The silliest part about the Deather argument is that it has NOTHING TO DO WITH GOVERMNENT RUN HEALTH CARE.
Let's make a gigantic leap of faith and assume that the health care bill in fact does put seniors at risk of being left behind by a system that treats them as "beyond repair". Maybe I'm crazy for thinking this, but isn't this a fixable problem? The common-sense reaction would be "wow, we have a big problem on our hands, let's work on the problem of "senior citizens getting left behind due to high maintenance". How did this turn into "government-run health care is inherently evil"?
The sickening part of this entire "deather" argument is that it's being used to destroy health care, rather than being used to refine and solidify the reform bill. If there was any honesty to this movement, they would be able to see that a public system could at least potentially co-exist with quality care for people of all ages and conditions. The fact that it's being used as a reason to keep government out of health care altogether just smacks of dishonesty, and needs to be called out.
So even before we call bullshit, this movement needs to be left bleeding in the moonlight, just on the premise of bringing to light a problem that can be fixed easily without jeopardizing the goals of universal coverage and decreased costs.
