In mcjoan's post today, More of that Good Ol' "Bipartisanship", she points us to a Wapo article in which Grassley says he has always been opposed to the Obama administration's health care plan.
That is not what he was saying in July of this year.
In the fundraising letter (pdf file), with "Received 8/10/09" handwritten at the top, Grassley says:
I had to rush you this Air-Gram today to set the record straight on my firm and unwavering opposition to government-run health care. And ask your immediate support in helping me defeat "Obama-care."
(...)
You know me, and you know that I'm not one to play games, pull punches or attempt to deceive anyone.
The simple truth is that I am and always have been opposed to the Obama administration's plan to nationalize health care. Period.
We all know that Grassley would not "attempt to deceive anyone," but he will lie to your face.
Here are a few remarks on Healthcare Reform made by Sen. Grassley on July 20th, 2009:
In those remarks, he says:
... One big issue ... this must be paid for ... some compromises that have to be reached on funding. But on policy, if you consider funding one thing and policy the other, we're making considerable progress on policy. ... I listened to the president ... the president didn't say anything I disagree with ... the goals the president wants is a goal that almost everybody in this country wants...
Which is it Chuck? How can the president not say anything you disagree with on a subject that you have "always have been opposed to...?"
On August 19, Greta Van Susteren asked Chuck about the possibility of a bipartisan deal on health care reform. In his response, he said he hadn't "said anything new since we adjourned for the summer break."
In the interim he had been telling people that they should be afraid of some bureaucrat "pulling the plug on grandma" and several other things that he knows, or knew, are not true.
Chuck Grassley is either lying or suffering from Dementia.
[Or, as suggested in the comments, both.]
