I must have heard that statement hundreds of times over the reign of President Bush. You can disagree with the policy, but you must respect the office of the President of the United States of America. He is our elected leader. As our leader, President Obama plans to address our school children to kick off this school year. This speech is planned for Sept 8th, and was to be broadcast to schools live at 12 pm EST.
According the US Dept of Education:
During this special address, the president will speak directly to the nation’s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.
Texas has immense challenges with education excellence and keeping our children in school. This address is even more important here. Of course, in a state where the leader is encouraging the most anti-American movement possible, secession, it should not be a surprise that those following his lead don't show the respect that the President of the United States deserves.
Governor Perry said today,
I am troubled that local school boards and superintendents were not involved in the process. State law gives parents the discretion over whether they think this is appropriate for their children.
Kay Bailey Hutchinson also said,
I share the concerns of many parents about the President addressing schools in a way that leaves little choice for parents if the speech includes a political agenda.
Well, neither needs to worry since many schools in Texas have decided not to show President Obama's address live to students due to the intense pressure of parents and elected officials who do not want their children to be influenced by this President. Some schools will offer the recording on their websites, some will show the message if the teacher deems it appropriate, some after parent permission is granted, some will simply not show it at all. Parents will be allowed to opt-out if they request.
If your school refuses to broadcast this important address to your children, it's up to you to be their educator. I urge parents across the country to record the speech which will be broadcast on C-SPAN, September 8th, 12 pm EST, and it will be available over the internet at http://www.whitehouse.gov/... Use the classroom activity guides to help you teach your children how they can achieve their goals.

You still have time to encourage your teachers, schools, principals, school boards and superintendents with letters and phone calls to let them know that you'd like your child to hear this important message by our President, and how important it is to model respect for the Office of the President of the United States of America.
