I suppose the Values Voters Summit, sponsored by the Family Research Council could have opened in a more offensive way than they did, but it’s hard to imagine. The pure arrogance of some no-talent clown rewriting a beautiful song, which belongs to all of us by the way, rename it, twist and torture it into a right-wing stream of self-righteous bullshit, for their own perverse political purposes is enough to make one gag!
"Why Should God Bless America?" is the title and first line, and it continues along this line of "reasoning," to trash the President and everything the administration wants to accomplish, regardless of whether it has any merit or who it might help. (Seriously, can anyone really kid themselves into believing the Republicans want anything good to happen to this country for the duration of the Obama Administration?)
What is particularly unsettling about the rewrite of God Bless America is the utter ignorance and arrogance of the author to 1) rewrite words of a beautiful song that actually means something to a lot of people in this country, 2) to make the shallow assumption that the God is some kind of "person," and 3) that the writer actually knows what God is thinking and how He/She/It (you pick) feels about it.
It is offensive on so many levels. If you believe in a God, a Being from which Life emanates and expresses, then it is logical to imagine that the God blesses us because it is the nature of God to bless. It is just what God does. And if you don’t believe in a God, then who cares? For a liberal, watching the crazies tangling themselves up, tripping and falling in their own webs of inanity is always entertaining, but we need to draw the line somewhere. Hands off the Irving Berlin you barbarians!
