New York politics is really pushing Illinois hard for the title of dumbest dems (DD's).
This is Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY 16) who introduced this bill looking to repeal the 22nd Amendment so any POTUS can run for a third term in office.
Now, maybe I'm getting this wrong, but there's a rationale behind two terms. Prior to FDR, it was a gentleman's agreement that two terms was the most that was seemly to aspire to. WW2 changed that dynamic when FDR was elected to a third term at the onset of global hostilities, passing away shortly after being elected to a fourth term.
Congress then codified the two term maximum into the Constitution as the 22nd Amendment. The POTUS is the only federal office with term limits, and it was established in recognition of the need for changing the most powerful position in the nation (arguably in the world still). This was not a bad idea then, and it is not a bad idea now. One of the hallmarks of our version of democracy is that our presidency changes hands on a regular basis, whether that president likes it or not.
On Jan 6, 2009, this bill was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. Rep Serrano has introduced this same bill in the 6 previous congresses, and had it die each time. As of this writing, there are no co-sponsors signed on to this bill. If this is about principle, it would be interesting to hear what that might be. As it stands, it looks like a time waster at best. Just what taxpayers need from congress at this juncture.
Here's a big Bronx cheer to the idea of pushing to allow third terms.
