I was visiting the beautiful new whitehouse.gov and enjoying looking through the former Presidents of the United States, when for some reason I decided to look at the profile of former President George W. Bush. What I found really surprised me. His profile on the site seems to end in 2001, with the attacks of 9/11. There is no mention of his subsequent invasions of Iraq or Afghanistan. No mention of the Patriot act. No mention of the major recession that began in his term.
The substantive portion of the profile ends with this:
On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked our Nation. President Bush took unprecedented steps to protect our homeland and create a world free from terror. He was grateful for the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform and their families. The President believed that by helping build free and prosperous societies, our Nation and our friends and allies can succeed in making America more secure and the world more peaceful.
I sincerely hope that President Obama's technical team simply copied this from the old whitehouse.gov. Such a whitewashed account of former President Bush's time in the White House would be at best historically inaccurate.
I ask the President's web team, please, include a more historically inclusive profile on your site. Former President Clinton's profile includes mention of his "personal indiscretions with a young woman White House intern." As it stands now, I feel this is grossly unbalanced. If whitehouse.gov is to be a truly effective part of the new administration's new focus on government transparency, what happened in the last eight years must not be overlooked
