The Faux Noiz station here in LA just announced that the dark prince is under investigation. I did see him in my old neighborhood in Los Angeles at Vons, a grocery store, about five years ago. I wanted to say something to him then, but store security was following him closely. He had a cart full of tuna, Ritz crackers, and stool softener. I figured it wasn't up to me. The local ABC station has confirmed the investigation, too.
Cardinal Roger Mahony, the head of the catholic church here in Los Angeles, has had a long and controversial reign over the city. He started as a priest in 1975. He has upset many people in the country and the city for building one of the largest and most expensive churches in America here. It is officially named cathedral of our lady of the angels, but around town it is known as the Taj Mahony. It cost almost $200 million to build. The altar alone was said to have cost $5 million. The cathedral has no outreach services for poor people. The poor have to go to the neighborhood parishes for services like housing, food, or money. He also upset the GLBQTI community by calling them abominations.
Durning the 80s and 90s, mahony is accused of moving pedophile priests around to different churches and dioceses to protect the church and the priests, not the victims of the behavior. When a class action lawsuit was filed and prosecutors wanted to gain information about abusive priests, mahony took the case all the way to SCOTUS to keep the files private. There were over 500 victims in the lawsuit and the archdiocese paid out over $660 million while trying to deny responsibility. More controversy arose when he decided to sell a local convent, owned by the nuns, to help pay for his wrongdoing.
Federal prosecutors are investing the archdiocese and the dark prince! Hundreds of victims have come forward, both men and women, to say they have been molested by priests. At least one of the women had a child fathered by a priest, can you imagine what that child was asked growing up about her father being a father? The archdiocese is upset that the prosecutors were unprofessional for allowing the leak of an ongoing grand jury investigation. They had no similar outrage for the cardinal moving offending priests around to protect the church from litigation and economic sanctions. The strategy did not really work well as the church had to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars to the victims, who filed a class-action lawsuit. Personally, I am a heathen and could not be happier at the prospect of a cardinal being hauled away in handcuffs, especially a cardinal who is so hateful towards the GLBQTI community. Let's hope for the best outcome possible for the victims and the GLBQTI community.
