On Thursday, a panel took place at the World Economic Forum in Davos that had nothing to do with the worldwide economic meltdown. David Ignatius moderated a panel of world leaders - UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Arab League President Amr Moussa, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Israeli President Shimon Peres. Before a packed audience, which included Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, passions ran high, and before the end, Erdogen, who wanted to rebut Peres, stalked off the stage.
The article in Haaretz includes a clip of the Prime Minister walking out, but without translation from the Turkish.
The next day, Peres called Erdogen, and reported that their "strategic" relationship was not harmed by this disagreement. Turkey has been the mediator between Israel and Syria, and before the Gaza attack said they were close to a direct meeting between the two countries. Relationships between Israel and Turkey have been strained since then. Egypt has been the mediator between Gaza and Israel. Turkey has asked to participate, but Israel has not responded. For those who would like to watch the whole discussion, I include it here.
