Jon Krakauer, author of the new book "Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman" was on the Daily Show tonight and spoke about General Stanley A. McChrystal's key role in the cover up and exploitation of Pat Tillman's death to help the Bush re-election in 2004.
On today's Daily Show, Krakauer spoke with Jon Stewart about his new book "Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman" which recounts the saga of Pat Tillman's life and the aftermath of his tragic death by friendly fire in Afghanistan. One of the explosive charges he made was concerning General Stanley A. McChrystal's key role in the cover up and exploitation of Pat Tillman's death in order to help the Bush re-election campaign in 2004.
According to Krakauer, the six month period leading up to the 2004 election was filled with very bad news for the Bush administration ranging from the breaking Abu Ghraib scandal to the failed first attack on Fallujah as well as the death of Tillman, arguably the most famous American soldier at the time. To counter this rash of damaging events, Krakauer stated that the Bush White House decided to fabricate a glorified account of Tillman's death as a ploy to draw attention away from the bad news and to put a patriotic spin on a soldier's death that was almost certainly known to McChrystal to be a case of friendly fire.
Krakauer believes that McChrystal was at the center of the plan to white wash Tillman's death for public consumption and acknowledged that talking about this information was contributing to an awkward situation (with McChrystal currently being our key man in Afghanistan and asking Obama for tens of thousands of additional troops) and that it would be best if McChrystal "came clean" with the truth before the situation got worse.
