Rick Perry spoke today about the Cameron Willingham case. In his public statement he neglected to comment about his decision to replace members of the Forensic Science Commission instead he decided to make his statement one of a description of how much Mr. Willingham deserved to die based on his being a
"monster"
.
This was an attempt to paint Mr. Willingham as a monster who deserved to die. This was based not completely on the initial forensic investigation but also on the fact that Willingham had done bad things in the past.
Governor Perry described how Willingham had attempted to cause the death of his babies by "beating" his pregnant wife. Although these actions had nothing to do with proving that Mr. Willingham set the fire that caused the deaths of his children.
"Go and really look at the facts of this case, not what some biased group of individuals are putting out and feeding you," Perry told reporters after a speech to a Realtors’ group in Austin.
The Austin American Statesman today stated that Mr. Perry, who is in a difficult reelection campaign against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, must be very wary in his statements regarding this national story.
This is a story that seems to "have legs" and will continue to be publicized by the national media.
We must make sure that this story does not "go away" anytime soon.
