A report comes in from a constituent in the Nashville area, after yesterday's Time to Deliver phone calls in Tennessee:
I spoke with a very gracious and knowledgable staffer named Becky at Sen Corker's office. She indicated that Sen Corker believes a public option would create a government monopoly of healthcare, forcing private insurers out of business, as it would be able to charge less and would eventually enroll everyone, as it is human nature to want to pay less for health insurance.
Did you catch that?
Government will become a monopoly because they can "charge less" and "eventually enroll everyone".
And that's a problem because... ???
The GOP hypocrisy has become legendary. Corker voted for the TARP program that bailed out banks, but didn't support assistance for the auto makers when they faced bankruptcy and massive layoffs. Now, we find that unemployment in Michigan has increased by 6.4 percent in the past year.
Why would we be surprised?
Corker has repeatedly voted for big business and against working families in Tennessee. And he continues to espouse the kind of trickle-down economic theories that have been disproven again and again by our history over the past 30 years.
The prosperity for the few has not trickled down to the rest of America. Because it's human nature - people want to pay less. But the middle class is paying more in taxes, and the wealthy are making a killing with socialized risk and privatized profits.
Corker knows that a public option would destroy the status quo. Healthcare costs would be lowered, creating less burden on families, businesses, and government. But again and again, Corker puts the profits of the few ahead of the needs of the many.
Corker accused Harold Ford, Jr. of cavorting with loose women in the Playboy mansion.
Who's Corker screwing around with now? He's in bed with big business.
