As the budget balloons, some Democrats are pushing back, recognizing the pitfalls of being identified as the party of spending. A proposal is being potentially floated to create a bipartisan commission to come up with solutions.
The idea of a bipartisan commission is not new, even on the budget. While the details aren't clear, many budget proposals of this sort proposes such a commission modeled on the commission involved with military base closings. In other words once the commission came up with the plan it had to be voted thumbs up or thumbs or down.
Some Democrats fear the Republicans refusal to raise taxes will hinders this effort . This could be the Democrats chance to demonstrate superior leadership on the budget: i.e. walk the walk. If the Democrats can succeed on this commission and effectively reduce the budget--they have yet to do this--it will demonstrate that much more how bankrupt the Republicans are. However, if the Democrats are willing to raise taxes, but not cut spending (when required) they won't come out any better than the Republicans.
